| ARTIST STATEMENT JOY BAER FRESCOES IN PUBLIC SPACES Inspired by the spiritual storytelling frescoes of Pompeii, Italy, where I teach fresco workshops, I paint to convey the lost language of symbolism. I strive for "romanita" which is an Italian concept of time that is not measured by clocks or calendars, but through eternity. Following the historical frescoes found in cultures around the world, I create the fresco process on plaster, rocks, marble, cement, and cave walls. A fresco casein is created on treated canvas. "Fresco" is Italian for "fresh." I use the time-honored fresco process using fresh earth minerals and fresh water painted onto a natural porous surface. Carbonization is formed, which is a chemical bond that endures for centuries. I am passionate to create frescoes as a timeless form of communication.
